Damaging Blizzard Conditions in West Loop, Chicago?
2/11/2025 (Permalink)
Our local teams in West Loop/Bucktown/Greektown restore commercial property damage caused by severe winter weather every year. Residents in the West Loop area may recall the blizzard of 1979, one of the worst blizzards to hit Chicago.
The storm hit Chicago on January 12-14, 1979, and storm dropped nearly 20 inches of snow on the city, with some areas seeing even higher accumulations. The wind gusts reached up to 50 mph, creating whiteout conditions that made travel nearly impossible.
Impact on Chicago
Snow accumulation: The snowfall was especially heavy in parts of the city and surrounding areas, leading to snowdrifts up to 10 feet high.
Temperature: Temperatures during the storm were brutally cold, with wind chills plunging to -40°F or colder. The combination of snow and cold created dangerous conditions for anyone caught outside.
Travel disruption: Roads and highways became impassable, and O'Hare International Airport was shut down for days, stranding travelers and forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.
Power outages: Due to downed power lines and transformers, thousands of homes and businesses were left without power.
Casualties: While the storm was not as deadly as some other historic storms, there were still fatalities due to accidents, exposure, and heart-related incidents triggered by the extreme cold.
